Food Intolerances

What is food intolerance?

Food intolerance in a nutshell is an inability to digest certain foods or a non allergic food hypersensitivity. A food intolerance is different from a food allergy. Food allergies are pretty immediate but food intolerances take longer to surface.  Food allergies are irreversible  whereas food intolerances can be reversible after removing the offending food for 3 to 6 months. The onset of a food intolerance can occur several hours after eating the offending food or compound and may persist for several hours or for days. Up to 45% of the population suffer from food intolerances.

Nearly all foods require and enzyme for digestion and enzyme deficiences are a common cause of food intolerances as well as chemical sensitivity.

What foods cause food intolerance?

Some of the common offenders are dairy products, grains that contain gluten and foods that can cause a build up of intestinal gas such as beans.

What are some of the symptoms of food intolerance?

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Tension

What are the causes of food intolerance?

Generally the absence of an enzyme to digest food will cause food intolerance.  People with lactose tolerance do not have enough lactase which is an enzyme to break down milk sugar (lactose) into smaller molecules so that the body can break them down further and absorb through the intestine.  Lactose cannot be absorbed through the gut wall into the bloodstream.  If it remains in the digestive tract it can cause spasm, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and gas.  People with an allergy to milk protein have similar symptoms to those with lactose intolerance and lactose intolerance individuals are often misdiagnosed as allergic.

Food intolerance testing

At Think Nutrition we use Lorisian Food Intolerance tests that analyse a blood sample for food specific IgG antibody reactions. Lorisian offers 4 different types of test depending on your budget. The test involves taking a few drops of blood using a simple finger prick blood collection system. It is a very simple system, the sample can be taken anywhere at our practice on Suffolk Street or in your home. The sample is posted back to the laboratory in a prepaid envelope tested and analysed for IgG antibody reactions to a maximum of 150 food and drink ingredients. Clear colour coded results are delivered back to you. Based on the results we can then discuss dietary and nutritional changes to optimise your health and get you back on track because without proper digestion you can feel pretty rotten.

Lorisian 50 - analyses your IgG antibody reaction to 50 food ingredients

Lorisian 75 - analyses your IgG antibody reaction to 75 food ingredients

Lorisian 100 - analyses your IgG antibody reaction to 100 food ingredients

Lorisian 150 - analyses your IgG antibody reacgtion to 150 food ingredients
